Last Saturday marked a special milestone for our Arts for All! program: The matinee audience included the 75,000th student to attend an Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater performance since 1990, when we began offering free and discounted tickets to Alvin Ailey performances. Ahead of the performance, Alvin Ailey Artistic Director Robert Battle gave a curtain speech that recognized the 200 students in attendance and reminded the audience of the importance of the performing arts.
“Experiencing the arts opens a door for young people to dream and excel and see beyond place and circumstance,” said Battle. He also quoted Alvin Ailey, “What is important is the quality of our work, of a culture in which the young are not afraid to take chances and can hold on to their values and self-esteem, especially in the arts and dance. That’s what it’s all about to me.”
Following the performance, a select group of students from Boston Arts Academy and the Mattapan Teen Center were invited backstage to meet Battle and several company dancers. It was an exciting end to #75KDay, and we are grateful to everyone at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater who helped to make it happen!
On stage and off, Arts for All! programs harness the creative energy of the performing arts to build thriving communities and cultivate the next generation of artists and audiences. Arts for All! programs offer interactive artist-led workshops for youth, free community concerts in Boston neighborhoods, master classes with main stage artists, public performance projects such as Street Pianos and Let’s Dance Boston, and thousands of free and discounted tickets annually, available to K-12 and college students and youth-focused community groups. Through these programs and partnerships, Celebrity Series aims to break down economic, physical, and other barriers that limit access to the performing arts.
